As Europe continues to modernise its border management systems, ODYSSEUS stands out as a concrete example of how advanced technology can enhance security while fully respecting fundamental rights.
Following three years of intensive research, development and validation in real operational environments, the European ODYSSEUS project has reached its conclusion, delivering tangible results for the future of European border management.
Coordinated by the Romanian IT company Software Imagination & Vision (SIMAVI), ODYSSEUS brought together international partners, border authorities and technology experts to address one of Europe’s most sensitive challenges: securing borders through advanced, interoperable technologies fully compliant with fundamental rights and data protection requirements.

From the outset, ODYSSEUS set out to address the real operational challenges faced by border authorities and law-enforcement agencies across Europe.
SIMAVI played a central role as Project Coordinator, but also in shaping and delivering the project’s core technological outcomes. As the developer of the integrated ODYSSEUS platform, SIMAVI was responsible for designing a unifying software framework capable of bringing together advanced identity verification, AI-driven risk assessment, multi-sensor data fusion and operational decision-support tools into a single, coherent operational environment.

A key innovation delivered by SIMAVI is the ability to integrate heterogeneous technologies and data sources into a platform that supports seamless, non-stop border crossing procedures while maintaining high standards and full compliance with European regulations. The platform enables border authorities and law-enforcement agencies to move beyond fragmented and manual processes, providing real-time situational awareness and reliable decision support across land, sea and rail border contexts.
SIMAVI’s work in this EU funded project combined deep technical expertise with strong system integration capabilities. The Romanian software company led the architectural design of the platform, ensured interoperability between project components and supported their deployment and validation in real operational environments. This included close collaboration with end-users to ensure that the developed solutions addressed real-world operational needs, constraints and workflows.
SIMAVI’s focus on regulatory compliance and responsible innovation was a very important factor. All platform components were designed according to privacy-by-design and ethics-by-design principles, with strict adherence to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and alignment with emerging European AI governance frameworks. This approach ensured that technological innovation went hand in hand with respect for fundamental rights and human oversight.
The ODYSSEUS project also highlighted SIMAVI’s capacity to contribute to large-scale European collaborations. The team worked closely with international partners over three years, coordinating the project management activities and the integration of the ODYSSEUS platform with other technologies.
The project formally concluded with the ODYSSEUS final event, where partners presented key achievements, validation results, and lessons learned. As part of the closing activities, partners also visited the RAPI premises and participated in the final pilot, gaining first-hand insight into the industrial environment behind several project technologies and their potential for real-world deployment.
With its successful completion, ODYSSEUS leaves a strong legacy: a portfolio of validated technologies, practical experience gained in operational settings, and a solid foundation for future exploitation and further development. The project’s outcomes make a tangible contribution to Europe’s ongoing efforts to modernise border management – strengthening security and efficiency while fully respecting fundamental rights.
With the completion of ODYSSEUS, SIMAVI strengthens its position as a trusted technology provider, with a secure digital platform addressing complex public-sector challenges. The experience and results gained through this project provide a strong foundation for future innovation, exploitation and collaboration in the field of advanced border management and security solutions.
