London Jazz Festival

What used to be a week of jazz in Camden in the 1970s is now the city-wide London Jazz Festival, a major international event drawing musicians and jazz enthusiasts from across the globe. Fans will be treated to performances from talented world stars and emerging British musicians. This year’s highlights include Madeleine Peyroux’s Anthem tour, a rare London appearance from US comic and musician Lea DeLaria and Orphy Robinson’s reinterpretation of Van Morrison’s album Astral Week.

Bonfire Night

Watch rockets and starbursts pop and sparkle over the city’s skyline as the nation celebrates on 5th November; the anniversary of a failed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament, orchestrated by Guy Fawkes in 1605. It falls on a Monday this year – expect festivities and merriment in and around the capital’s royal parks throughout the preceding weekend, as well as on the infamous night itself.

Lord Mayor’s Show

Connecting 21st-century London with its medieval roots, the Lord Mayor’s Show is the oldest and grandest civic ceremony in the world. For the past 800 years on Lord Mayor’s Day, the newly appointed Lord Mayor takes to the streets in a golden coach travelling to Westminster to swear loyalty to the Crown. The procession is open to the public, and many crowds gather to witness the three-mile pageant followed by a dazzling firework display.

Enchanted Woodland at Syon Park

Home to the Duke of Northumberland and his family, Syon House is more than five centuries old, and while its spectacular gardens are popular year-round, they present one of London’s starring events in November. Follow a fairytale trail around Syon Park’s pretty lake and through its atmospheric arboretum, dramatically illuminated with coloured lights. It’s a delight for children and adults alike. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, the manor’s intriguing Enchanted Woodlandoften sells out, so book tickets in advance.

Guaranteed to delight classic car enthusiasts and vintage vehicle lovers, The Regent Street Motor Show offers attendees the chance to view an array of British automobiles, spanning 125 years of engineering. This year’s extravaganza incorporates a Top Gear simulation experience, in which visitors are invited to ‘test drive’ a Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 car.

La Fille Mal Gardée

Based on an 1828 French ballet, La Fille Mal Gardée (The Wayward Daughter) is Frederick Ashton’s final full-length ballet. Enjoy some of his most virtuoso choreography, laced with humour and elements of national folk dance. Despite the French title, this is an emphatically English production complete with a Suffolk setting and Maypole dancing.
